Peters Bakery is a San Jose landmark. Tony Peters, the creator, was born in 1907 in San Jose to a poor Portuguese family. He couldn’t speak English when he started grammar school. Mr. Peters worked for Studebaker throughout the week and spent his weekends in San Francisco with his uncle, who owned a bakery there. On Saturdays, he learned the trade at his uncle’s store. Then, he launched Peters Bakery at Delmas and San Carlos Streets on April 15, 1936. He opened a second bakery on Alum Rock Avenue, just east of White Road, two years later.
Tony Peters educated over 100 bakers over the years, and many of them went on to open their bakeries. Also, he had a fantastic employee retention rate. Tony Peters has already died, but his influence in San Jose lives on. The oldest family-owned bakery in Silicon Valley, Peters Bakery, is currently owned and operated by two of Tony’s children.
