Flour Power History
Alfred Nickles founded the company in 1909 as a tiny bakery in Navarre. It now has three bakeries (in Navarre, Lima, and Martins Ferry) that serve 300 commercial routes throughout Ohio, western Pennsylvania, and northern West Virginia. In 1998, the business added 65,000 square feet to the Navarre bakery while closing a bakery in Indiana.
Moreover, the corporation built equipment in Navarre that will allow for faster, more automated bread and bun production. More than 100 loaves of bread are produced per minute. The corporation is therefore capitalizing on the downfall of the Hostess brand by producing more doughnuts and releasing an enlarged line of rye bread, for example. The bakery has also hired some former Hostess employees.
George Bennington, one of roughly 500 employees at the Navarre bakery/home office, considers himself fortunate to have a unionized production job that pays him far above minimum wage after more than 30 years. Also, Bennington expressed gratitude that the family ownership has been maintained. Kathy McKain, a fellow bakery production worker who has been at the company for 12 years and earns $13.75 per hour, agrees, noting that the position provides health benefits. In addition, Nickles will be inducted into the Baking Hall of Fame among the founders of Schwebel’s, Pepperidge Farms, and Sara Lee.
