Company History
Big Y reported in July 2016 that it has entered into a purchase deal with Ahold and Delhaize Group for eight Hannaford Brothers sites in Massachusetts as part of the store divestiture required to obtain FTC approval for the imminent Ahold/Delhaize merger. Moreover, the new Hannaford-converted stores can be found in Kingston, Quincy, Norwell, Milford, Norwood, West Peabody, Saugus, and Easton, Massachusetts. Also, with the addition of the eight additional stores, Big Y now has 37 stores in Massachusetts, extending its presence from the Berkshires to Greater Boston.
Furthermore, as of December 2021, Big Y runs 72 supermarkets in Massachusetts and Connecticut, most of which are in Springfield, Worcester, Greater Boston, and Hartford. In addition to regular supermarkets, Big Y owns and manages two specialty markets: Table & Vine, a large specialized liquor and wine store in West Springfield, and Fresh Acres Market, a Springfield innovation that combines an open-air farmers’ market with upmarket dining options. In addition, Big Y ran two distinct pharmacies in Springfield and Wilbraham before incorporating them into the pharmacies.
During 2013 and 2021, Big Y opened 12 petrol stations and convenience stores in Western Massachusetts and Connecticut under the name “Big Y Express,” with the majority of Big Y Express locations next to or neighboring a full-size Big Y supermarket.
